How Islamic inheritance (Faraid) works
Islamic inheritance law assigns fixed Quranic shares to close relatives: a husband gets 1/2 (no children) or 1/4 (with children); a wife gets 1/4 (no children) or 1/8 (with children), shared equally among up to four wives; the father gets 1/6 when there are children; the mother gets 1/6 with children or 1/3 without. Sons and daughters then share the residue in a 2:1 ratio.
Order of distribution
Funeral expenses are paid first.
Debts of the deceased are settled.
Bequests (wasiyyah) up to one-third are executed.
The remainder is distributed to heirs by fixed shares.
Frequently asked questions
How is inheritance divided in Islam?
Close relatives receive fixed Quranic shares: husband 1/2 or 1/4, wife 1/4 or 1/8, father 1/6, mother 1/6 or 1/3. Sons and daughters divide the remainder with each son receiving twice a daughter's share.
Can a wife inherit if there are sons?
Yes. A wife always inherits a fixed share: 1/8 of the estate when the deceased left children, or 1/4 when there are no children. If there are multiple wives, they share this portion equally.
Do daughters inherit equally with sons?
Daughters inherit as residuary heirs together with sons in a 2:1 ratio (each son gets twice a daughter's share). If there are only daughters and no sons, two or more daughters share 2/3 of the estate.
