What is the Qibla?
The Qibla is the direction Muslims face when they pray — toward the Kaaba, the sacred black cube at the center of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Facing the Qibla is a condition for the validity of the five daily prayers, which is why finding it accurately matters everywhere you travel.
The Kaaba sits at approximately 21.4225° north and 39.8262° east. From your location, the Qibla is not simply "east" or "west" — it is the shortest path over the curved surface of the Earth (called a great circle). For example, from North America the Qibla points northeast, and from Indonesia it points northwest.
