How prayer times are determined

The five daily prayers in Islam are tied to the position of the sun, which is why their times shift a little every day. Fajr begins at true dawn, when the first light spreads across the horizon. Dhuhr starts just after the sun passes its highest point. Asr begins when the shadow of an object reaches a defined length. Maghrib starts at sunset, and Isha begins when the red twilight disappears from the sky.

Because "dawn" and "twilight" are defined by how far the sun sits below the horizon, scholars and institutions use slightly different angles — for example 18 degrees or 15 degrees. These small differences are why two apps can show Fajr a few minutes apart. Neither is "wrong"; they simply follow different accepted conventions.

How to use this prayer times tool

    About the Hijri date

Alongside each day's prayer times you will see the Hijri (Islamic lunar calendar) date. The Islamic calendar follows the moon, so months like Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhul-Hijjah begin with the sighting of the new crescent. The Hijri date shown here is calculated astronomically and is accurate for planning; your local moon-sighting committee has the final word for religious observances.

Tips for never missing a prayer

Sehri, Iftar, Tahajjud & Other Times

Sehri time ends at Fajr — stop eating a few minutes before the Fajr time shown above. Iftar time begins at Maghrib — break your fast when Maghrib starts. During Ramadan, use this page daily for accurate sehri iftar time in your city.

Tahajjud time is the last third of the night — calculate it as: (Fajr time minus Isha time) ÷ 3, counted back from Fajr. For example, if Isha is 8:00 PM and Fajr is 5:00 AM, the night is 9 hours, so Tahajjud begins around 2:00 AM. Ishraq time is ~15 minutes after sunrise, and Chasht (Duha) time extends until just before Dhuhr.
